Shimla was the most important British hill resort, prior
to India's independence. It is named after its patron goddess, Shamla Devi,
a manifestation of Kali. Simla, located at an altitude of 7,267 feet, is
inhabited around a crescent - shaped ridge, which is blessed with perennially
cool air and amazing views. Shimla in itself is a very small town and is
very well maintain and neatly kept city. Shimla has been blessed with all
the natural bounties. Dwelling on a panoramic location, the hilly town
is surrounded by green pastures and snow-capped peaks. The spectacular
cool hills accompanied by the structures made during the colonial era create
an aura, which is very different from other hill stations.
The Mall, packed with shops and eateries, is the centre of attraction of the town, and Scandal Point, associated with the former Maharaja of Patiala's escapades, offers a view of distant snowclad peaks. The main attractions of Shimla include the Rashtrapati Niwas, formerly the residence of the British Viceroy, the State Museum, which has a modest collection of stone statues from different parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jakhu Temple, dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Shimla has all the facilities required for tourists but they can be very expensive particularly during the peak season. There are several buildings still retain elements of a bygone glory,
the street holds the famous Gaiety Theatre whose neo-Gothic structure was
completed in 1887 and once towered above the town. Every year in the month
of June, the Folk Dance festival, the "Mushaira" - recitation of Urdu poetry
by poets, the Red Cross Fair, Golf and the Flower Show are some of the
events held in Shimla, to celebrate Summer Festival.
